●Town Info

Jiyugaoka is not a tourist spot. A fancy residential area frequently ranked No.1 as the place Japanese want to live, the town looks identical to the streets often seen in Europe. For foreigners such as yourselves (especially if you are from the west) you won’t have a clue to what the hype is about, and that is the point. In recent years Jiyugaoka has become synonymous with sweets town, and as the name suggests there are several famous sweets shops, or patisseries, run by the best in the industry, from a world champion patissier to former chef patissier of a 3 star Michelin restaurant in Europe. Not to be neglected are the many long established Japanese wagashi - Japanese traditional sweets - in the area as well. A gathering of sweets shops by top patissiers can be found a short walk from the station in a place called “Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest” - a kind of theme park for sweets. Plenty of fashionable shops and cafes are dotted around town, so it’s a nice place to go for a stroll. In spring the cherry blossoms blooming along the cherry tree-lined path at Kuhonbutsu River Green Way - Kuhonbutsugawa ryokudo - is quite famous.
