Neighboring the world's largest and greatest wholesale fish market, Tsukiji, is Tsukishima. Over 70 shops that specialize in Monjayaki - pan-fried battered street food - can be found along Monja Street.
With Tsukiji's delectable seafood and Tsukishima's monjayaki shops, the area is like a treasure box of wonderful food.
Not only is Tsukiji a wholesale fish market bustling with energy, but also a must eat place for 1st timers. The sushi shops use the utmost fresh ingredients to serve their loyal customers.
If you are one to try, you better be prepared to get up early. The shops usually open around 5am and closes around early afternoon. Your best bet is to go in the morning, and as you stroll your way to the sushi restaurants, take in the smell, the sight, and all that Tsukiji has to offer. Be sure to try out their “tamago yaki” or Japanese style fried eggs, Japanese sweets (wagashi), and other traditional Japanese food.
When visiting be aware that in the “inner market” regular people cannot go in and buy anything, compared to the “outer market” where it’s tailored for locals and the general public.
Tsukishima is the place of Tokyo’s soul food, Monjayaki - pan-fried batter. It doesn’t look particularly appetizing, but it sure is good. Recommended is to order the all you can eat. The food itself is not too heavy allowing you to consume a lot more than you would think, or if you eat a lot, it’s to your benefit to order all you can eat.

Things to be aware of at Tsukiji Market:
Tsukiji is separated into 2 areas: the inner and outer market. Actual trading and selling of seafood takes place at the inner market, and the outer realm is home to around 400 shops selling everything from fresh fish to Japanese sweets.
In the inner market, regular people such as yourself cannot purchase anything, but you can sure eat at one of shops.
For shopping, visit the outer market. Many of the areas you walk around are a bit dirty, so it is advised not to wear your best loafers or clothes.
Be sure to check the day you plan to visit. The market is closed on Sundays, holidays and often Wednesdays. It’ll be painful story to tell if the day you trekked it out to the market it was shut down.
For the lucky few that can make it, tours are available to get a first hand look at the inner market and wholesale auctions of tuna. Tours begin from 5:25am and 5:50am ONLY and 120 visitors per day allowed. No reservations can be made in advance and flash photography is prohibited, so let’s be respectful.
Tsukiji Market is not for the faint of heart. It is the largest fish market in the world and the energy of the place will get you excited. There are more than 400 eateries surrounding the outer market, most of which serve fresh raw fish at a very low cost. This is one of the few chances you can enjoy absolute freshness at those prices, so you better darn go.
Tsukishima, on the other hand, is famous for the Monjayaki dish, a type of hot plate with mixed ingredients. The menu can vary in style and taste, and the best part is, you can make the dish yourself…at least try to (with the help of the restaurant staff.) You won’t have a clue how to eat it either, so again, ask the staff for help.
